What is Dulcolax like?
I have a lot of experience with Dulcolax. If it has only been a day you are probably not constipated enough to use Dulcolax. It is also hard to know correct dosage without a bit of experimentation. One tablet may not be enough for some people while that dosage will give other people diarrhea. Be prepared for cramping. The packaging states that it takes anywhere from 6 to 12 hours to work when taken at bedtime. I find that it works for me in 12 to 14 hours. Needless to say, you want to have access to a toilet starting about 4 hours after you take it. I would avoid the Dulcolax and purchase a mild osmotic laxative like milk of magnesia at my first opportunity.Featured

Bisacodyl: A review of pharmacology and clinical evidence to guide use in clinical practice in patients with constipation
Bisacodyl is a member of the diphenylmethane family and is considered to be a stimulant laxative. It has a dual prokinetic and secretory action and needs to be converted into the active metabolite bis‐(p‐hydroxyphenyl)‐pyridyl‐2‐methane (BHPM) in the gut to achieve the desired laxative effect. Bisacodyl acts locally in the large bowel by directly enhancing the motility, reducing transit time, and increasing the water content of the stool.

Colace vs. Dulcolax: Differences, similarities, and which is better for you
Dulcolax (bisacodyl EC) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat and relieve the symptoms of constipation. Dulcolax is a laxative and works by directly stimulating peristaltic movement by irritating the mucosa of the intestine. This stimulation physically moves the stool through the tract. Dulcolax produces its desired effect more quickly than Colace, typically within 8-12 hours with oral administration.
Dulcolax – A Reliable and Affordable Over-the-Counter Laxative for Occassional Constipation Relief
When taken orally, Dulcolax reaches the colon where it stimulates the nerve endings, causing contractions and aiding in bowel movements. It also attracts water into the colon, softening the stools and making them easier to pass.
Is Dulcolax (bisacodyl) safe?
Dulcolax works by stimulating the intestinal muscles and increasing water in the stool, which helps promote bowel movements, but this mechanism also explains why some people experience cramping as a side effect.
New study results confirm efficacy and safety
In a clinical study Boehringer Ingelheim recently conducted, Dulcolax tablets with the active ingredient bisacodyl clearly demonstrated efficacy by increasing the frequency and regularity of bowel movements.
Oral Bisacodyl Is Effective and Well-Tolerated in Patients With Chronic Constipation
Bisacodyl has been used extensively since it first appeared in 1952. It is an over-the-counter laxative. In that time no data have emerged confirming any concerns about the safety of long-term use, although this has not been formally tested over prolonged periods of months or years. However, the information accompanying the medication instructs the patient not to take the laxative on a continuous daily basis or for extended periods without investigating the cause of constipation. In this trial a 4-week treatment period was investigated; the effects and safety beyond 4 weeks cannot be extrapolated from these data.
What is Bisacodyl used for?
Bisacodyl is a widely used medication primarily known for its efficacy in treating constipation and for its application in bowel preparation before surgical procedures or diagnostic examinations such as colonoscopies. Available under several trade names, including Dulcolax, Correctol, and Fleet, bisacodyl falls under the category of stimulant laxatives.

Bisacodyl has been used as a first-line laxative for transient relief of occasional constipation. The 2023 guidelines from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) endorse the short-term use of bisacodyl as a therapeutic option for addressing chronic idiopathic constipation.
