My health story: inguinal hernia
Surfing, Jet-Skiing, hill-walking… I’ve always kept myself busy. Before I retired I even had two jobs. I was a painter and decorator and, at weekends, I was a children’s entertainer.
Ironically, it was the latter that started my problems. I was at a kids’ party, making a balloon sculpture, about 15 years ago. I tried to blow up a balloon that hadn’t been stretched first and ‘bang!’ I felt something go.
It was low down, just above the groin on the right-hand side. A quick burst of agony that subsided into a dull ache. I suspected it was a hernia – though, to be honest, I didn’t really know what one was. It was something people used to laugh about… maybe a gag in a Carry…

Inguinal Hernia Imaging and Reduction
Hernias that are clearly strangulated should not be reduced at the bedside and surgical consultation is warranted; however, these are not always easily distinguishable on physical exam. While patients with incarcerated hernias without strangulation can present with systemic symptoms including nausea and vomiting, signs of strangulation include toxic appearance of the patient, significant systemic symptoms, or pain that persists after reduction of the hernia.

The World's Biggest Hernia
I blogged a while back, complaining that I had a hernia. It's large. It visibly protrudes from my abdomen. It's to my right, in the corner of the triangle that pubic hair makes. I've been trying to get surgery since the middle of December.
What Having Hernia Surgery Taught Me About Time Management
Hernia surgery isn’t terrible; it’s outpatient and laparoscopic. But it’s serious enough to require general anesthesia during and Percocet after. It took me off my usual game and forced me to evaluate how I spend my time.
Why Are Men More Susceptible to Hernias?
Inguinal hernias can happen to women, but they’re far more common in men. This is because of men’s different anatomy in the groin area. Men have a small hole in the groin muscles necessary for blood vessels to pass through to their testicles. This slight difference makes men more susceptible to inguinal hernias than women.

An inguinal hernia is a bulging of the contents of the abdomen through a weak area in the lower abdominal wall. Inguinal hernias can occur at either of two passages through the lower abdominal wall, one on each side of the groin. These passages are called inguinal canals. Inguinal hernias can also occur through two deeper passages in the groin called the femoral canals. Hernias through these passages are also known as femoral hernias.
