Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome
It sucks. The cause is unknown, the cure is only a dream of ours, and treatment in is complicated and different for each individual that has the disorder. It takes a long time to figure out what will help each of us - Angie Moore

That's CVS
The only consistent thing about CVS is how inconsistent it is. Going a whole year without having a CVS episode means nothing to the dark entity which is my disorder.
CVS will come out of hiding and smash you in the face with a brick. CVS is like the thief who robs you blind of all things for which you’ve worked so hard and leaves you feeling violated, angry, and desperate. CVS is the death of health. But recovery is re-birth. I’ve had many deaths and re-births.
An entire year without an episode. My greatest CVS accomplishment to date. But a year was all… One year and 25 days, to be exact. And then just like that – it was “GAME OVER” flashing all over my screen. Reset. Too bad,…

Will Smoking Pot Make Me Vomit Forever?
Cyclic vomiting syndrome is on the rise among adults, and marijuana use may be partially to blame.
Cyclic Vomiting: A Century in Doctors' Blind Spot
It may seem improbable that a disorder first described in the medical literature in 1882 is still little known and poorly understood and more often than not misdiagnosed. That disorder is cyclic vomiting syndrome, or C.V.S., a very distressing, life-disrupting condition that experts once considered rare but now say is far more common than previously realized.
CVS in Adults
Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disorder with recurrent episodes of severe nausea and vomiting interspersed with symptom free periods. This syndrome was first described in the English literature in 1882. While CVS has been studied in pediatric populations, its occurrence in adults has been underappreciated. It is now thought that this crippling syndrome can occur in a variety of age groups including adults.
Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome
Initially described in children, cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is an idiopathic disorder that affects patients of all ages and is characterized by recurrent episodes of vomiting separated by symptom-free intervals or baseline health. Frequent misdiagnoses and delays in diagnosis often lead to years of recurrent vomiting.
Cyclic vomiting syndrome and functional vomiting in adults: association with cannabinoid use in males
Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is characterized by stereotypical episodes of vomiting separated by symptom-free intervals. However, the difficulty encountered in the management of patients with CVS may be a reflection of a deficiency in our understanding of the disorder.
Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome in Children and Adults: What Is New...
Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disabling functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by severe vomiting episodes that alternate with symptom-free periods. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge and highlight most recent data on prevalence, diagnosis, management, and impact of CVS in children and adults.
Cyclical vomiting syndrome: Recognition, assessment and management
Often, it may be difficult to distinguish episodes of CVS from other causes of acute abdomen and altered consciousness. Thus, the diagnosis of CVS remains largely one of exclusion.

Gastric Electrical Stimulation Is an Option for Patients with Refractory Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome
Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disabling migraine variant manifesting as severe episodes of nausea and vomiting and often refractory to many therapies. Gastric electrical stimulation (GES), which can reduce nausea and vomiting in gastroparesis, may provide symptomatic relief for drug-refractory CVS. This study assessed the utility GES in reducing the symptoms of CVS and improving the quality of life.
Role of chronic cannabis use: Cyclic vomiting syndrome vs cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
Cannabis is commonly used in cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) due to its antiemetic and anxiolytic properties. Paradoxically, chronic cannabis use in the context of cyclic vomiting has led to the recognition of a putative new disorder called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS).
What Is Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome (CVS)?
CVS is an unexplained disorder of children and adults that was first described by Dr. S. Gee in 1882. The condition is characterized by recurrent, prolonged attacks of severe nausea, vomiting, and prostration with no apparent cause. In some, there is severe abdominal pain. Vomiting occurs at frequent intervals for hours or days (1-4 days, most commonly). The episodes tend to be similar to each other in symptoms and duration, and are self-limited with return of normal health between episodes.

Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association
The Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association (CVSA) serves the needs of cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) sufferers, their families and professional care givers by raising awareness and providing education and support to those affected by cyclic vomiting, abdominal migraine and related disorders while advocating for and funding research.

GI Society
As is the case for many functional GI conditions, we do not know exactly what causes CVS, but there are certain factors that might contribute to its development. Researchers speculate at the possibility of some degree of mitochondrial inheritance, because a maternal family history of either CVS or migraines can make an individual more likely to develop this condition.
GARD
The underlying cause of CVS is unknown. Data suggest there is a strong genetic component for CVS in children, involving changes (mutations) in mitochondrial DNA. Researchers believe that the condition primarily affects the brain, causing abnormalities in how the brain and gut interact.
Mayo Clinic
Cyclic vomiting syndrome occurs in all age groups, though it often begins in children around 3 to 7 years old. Although it's more common in children, the number of cases diagnosed in adults is increasing. The syndrome is difficult to diagnose because vomiting is a symptom of many disorders.
NORD
The hallmark of cyclic vomiting syndrome is recurrent episodes of severe nausea and vomiting. In children, these episodes usually last for several hours to a few days. In adults, episodes tend to occur less frequently, but usually last longer for 8 days.
StatPearls
Affected children often miss school, and affected adults often visit the emergency department several times per year and require time off work. This activity describes the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of cyclic vomiting syndrome and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the care of affected patients.
