Well, alright smarty-patch. According to their website, the product name comes from its active ingredient methyl salicylate. They took the sal in salicylate and because that compound passes through the skin, they added the pas, and landed on SALONPAS. Salicylate + pas = salonpas. Hrm... but what about the o? These are the things that keep me up at night... Given the very low risk and very limited side effects, it would seem worth a try for individuals seeking a complementary and/or off-the-shelf product for pain relief.

My absolute favorite is the Salonpas Pain Relieving Gel Patch HOT, which uses a combination of cooling menthol with warming capsaicin (yep, the stuff that gives chilies their heat!) - that cold-hot mix is just right for handling a flaring joint, and this particular patch is a generous and stretchable 3"x5.5", making it useable on elbows, knees, lower back, wrapped around the wrist, or whatever body part happens to be screaming at you. This will be the one that becomes my medicine shelf staple - it may be very intense if you're not used to it, but when I'm in the grip of a strong flare, I need something powerful, and this is it. It's actually allowed me a couple nights of good restful sleep during flares that would normally have kept me from being able to sleep at all.

As someone who suffers from daily pain, I can honestly say that I am so very happy that I found Salonpas patches as they are now made in a bigger patch that covers a bigger surface area. By covering a bigger surface area, You can now get the pain relief to where you need it. My cats do not like the menthol smell but I find it soothing. They are 20% bigger and have better flexibility. This has been the answer to my prayers. You owe it to yourself to give these a try. I give Salonpas my thumbs up and my highest recommendation.
