In a shift away from their traditional inpatient facilities, health-care providers are investing in outpatient clinics, same-day surgery centers, free-standing emergency rooms and microhospitals, which offer as few as eight beds for overnight stays. Currently there are only a handful of stroke systems with protocols for screening potential patients and directing them to the stroke center, bypassing other hospitals. The goal is to administer thrombolysis treatment usually within 3 hours but in some cases up to 4.5 hours, although this may change as new treatments develop.
